Pre-Chrismas Giggle on us ...

Just before I leave you all for Christmas, I thought I would share with you our activities last Sunday.

We went to Wimpole Hall with my parents, my aunt and her husband and all my cousins for a lovely winters walk. It was absolutely brilliant and we loved every minute of it. We had some real giggles on the way 'round. The boys picked up some sticks and pretended they were soldiers ... then there was some tree climbing for everyone, including Kez!

I caught some absolutely brilliant pictures and put them all together into one of my movie things. But I was struggling to find the right music. I wanted something a bit christmassy, but warm and not too boppy. For ages I sat, trying lots of different songs unsuccessfully. Then, out of pure desperation, I used the track that is now on the video. Oh my goodness how I have laughed over this. This video was put together randomly by the computer and aligned to the music. The combination of photos in relation to lyrics is accidental but wonderful. Please watch AND listen to this one!

Ladies and Gentleman. I give you ... Brokeback Wimpole ...

Do I hear sleigh bells??

Doth mine ears deceive me, or can I hear sleigh bells on our rooftop??

Oh yes people - Christmas Is Here!  And we are going full hog as usual in the Hooper household! This year we have five trees ... and I'm still pretty certain that I can fit a few more in ... With everything decked out with garlands, bunting and enough fairy lights to take out most of Ampthill, we are feeling very festive over here.

And that reflects in the videos that you are about to view!

Kezia's pre-school had it's Christmas Bazaar. It is a brilliant event which is run by the Directors and Committee of Ladybirds - all of them are volunteer parents who have children at the pre-school. We raised a lot of money for the school, but the most important aspect of the fair was that it was entirely focussed on the age range of the children who attend the pre-school. So we had face painting, bauble decorating, pre-school age fair games, adopt a teddy ... and ... Father Christmas. Now, some of you may not know this, but us Watkinson's are highly connected in the Kringle Circles, if you'll pardon the expression. Grandpa Watkinson is often called upon, as am I, to act for Father Christmas during his busy times. And this was one of those occassions. Grandpa W did a fabulous job as Father Christmas and really got into the spirit of things. Thank you pops - we would've been stuck without you! xxxx

Then, there was Kezia's Christmas Concert at her pre-school. Her play was on a Wednesday. I knew this, because I am a Director at the pre-school. What I didn't know, until the Monday evening before the performance, was that Kezia needed to be a donkey for the concert. Not a rock-n-roller as I had previously thought. "A donkey?" I said, trying hard to look calm and totally nonflummoxed in a yummy mummy kind of way (difficult to do when you're wearing jodhpurs and wellies with horse poo on them, but I think I pulled it off) "Oh, how lovely. And, urm, does she need a costume?"
"No, don't worry" came the pre-schooler worker's reply, temporarily filling me with an eyelet of hope. "Just dress her in some brown clothes" All hope disappeared out of the window. Brown clothes? Why brown? Would a pink polka dot donkey be out of the question? Or perhaps a nice tartan kilted rock-n-roller with converse sparkly boots on style of donkey, thus using the one outfit I had erroneously got already.

So, not one to be fazed, I dashed onto Ebay found a donkey costume that was selling within the next 2 hours, won it and arranged with the woman, who lived just over an hour away on the other side of the next county, that I would collect it - thus endearing itself to me as the most expensive dressing up donkey outfit I have ever bought. Still, needs must. And if Kezia needs to be a donkey - then a donkey she shall be.

So the next morning we all got up nice and early, knowing that we had to trek over to get this outfit. There was one further complication to the whole affair. This particular day was the day after our wedding anniversary, and therefore it was my grandfather's (BIG G's) 93rd birthday. So off we trotted to Newport Pagnell to have a lovely lunch with my parents and grandparents. As we ate, the fog fell. And I'm not talking normal fog here. This was like James Herbert Fog! It was so thick and icy, that we daren't drive over to get the outfit. Brilliant. "Don't panic" came this call from the Hooper clan, as we dashed into Mothercare to find brown clothes for Kezia. We looked in the girls section. We looked in the boy section, giving you an indication as to how successful we were in the girls section. Nothing. Not a dickie bow. Until my husband, my wonderful, creative and, most importantly of all, my outfit saving husband cried "I have it. With cunning use of our creative skills, we can turn this Gruffalo onesie into a donkey"  "How much is it?" I cried. "Never mind," I said quickly "It's all we've got"

So there we were. Chance and I. Sat in the kitchen with Kezia asleep upstairs, slowly brutalising a stuffed monster. It's original bright orange eyes were more than a little alarming, so we decided to paint them white and give him little eyelids instead which helped to diminish the 'horse from hell' look he was currently sporting. With all of his spikes, horns and claws cut off, and a sleeve of my old jumper stuffed with teddy stuffing and stitched to the front of his face (the other sleeve obviously having been used to create a long mane at the back) he suddenly became a wonderful donkey! Exultant, a tired husband and wife smiled at each other, knowing that their daughter was going to be the best donkey there.

The donkey costume was excellent. There was, however, one design flaw. The amount of stuffing required to give the donkey his lovely squishy muzzle weighed quite a lot when it was stitched to what was essentially the hood of a onesie. Therefore, it weighed down on Kezia's forehead, pushing her over slightly into a bit of a stoop! However, I felt it aided the worn out donkey look - after all, that donkey must've been knackered after that long walk carrying Mary ...

The time came for Kezia's little group to step forward. And there she was, stooped in all her donkey glory. It was a moment of pride. We'd done it. Silence fell in the auditorium.

Then she opened her mouth and said, in the deepest and loudest voice she could muster  " Look mummy, I'm a don-Key"

After the excitement of the Christmas Concert, Father Christmas had one more surprise up his sleeve ... he had sent Kezia an email and I luckily was on hand to film her when she opened it. There is nothing I can say to describe this video to you. It just sums up what Christmas can really mean to people who believe.

Autumn Shenanigans

Right ... where were we?

Oh yes - our autumn shenanigans!

We started off autumn with our Halloween party at the pre-school.

Kezia was very excited to be going to her halloween party and had many practices at being a witch. The big day arrived and I did her hair in a funky manner and then, with a bit of face paint and a halloween costume that was bought by Nanny Hooper, we were ready to go!

She had a wonderful time and whilst she was there I dashed home to make myself up as a witch to collect her from the school. Sometimes I wonder if I take things a bit far ... but then I decided I didn't care and her and I rode her broomstick on the walk back home whilst singing 'whose afraid of the big bad wolf'. We then had a spooky tea - or Pooky tea as Kez likes to call it, before taking some silly photos of our rather dishevelled selves!

In November Mamma, Pops, Kez and I went to one of our favourite haunts - Castle Ashby. It's a beautiful manor house in Northamptonshire. It's still privately owned by the family, but you can walk around the some of their lovely gardens. We had a lovely lunch in the little cafe that is close by and then went for a wonderful ramble with all the lovely autumn leaves in colour around us.

Then came the big day we had been waiting for ... Kezia's first ballet exam! I think I was probably more worried about this than anyone else. Kez had to be absolutely immaculate for her exam. Her face had to be a certain way with a little bit of blue eyeshadow, some light blusher and clear lip gloss (it is showbiz after all, dahling!) which Kez thought was absolutely brilliant! Her outfit had to be sparkling and smart and there was not to be a hair out of place for her bun - not easy when you're wrestling with tight little curls! We used lots and lots of Chance's Brylcreem to keep it all in place! I tell you, it's more of a test for the mothers than it is for the children! I'm not sure I'm cut out to be the mother of a ballet dancer! chuckle Kezia did very well in her exam and 2 weeks later we got her results ...

Oh yes indeed - not just a pass, but a merit! Not bad for a 3 and a half yr old I feel. Not quite a distinction (hush now, you pushy mother) but we were incredibly proud of her.

Now then, before I launch you all into our Christmas goodiness, and whilst we are on the theme of ballet, I will fast forward you all to last week. It was the end of the ballet term last week, and to celebrate this momentous occassion parents and grandparents were allowed to watch their last lesson. Much the same as we did in July. I tell you what - she hasn't half come on in leaps and bounds! considering that the last time I was able to film her was less then 6 months ago - and she's had at least 8 weeks off in that time due to various school holidays - her progress can really be seen. And so ... once again ... I give you Kezia Ellowen Hooper: my beautiful daughter.

A catch up ...

So ... I last left you all enjoying a lovely video of Kez with Grandparents Hooper as we celebrated Jean's birthday in July.

As you can imagine, we have been up to quite a lot since then but I will try and condense it down a bit to save you all the agony of a really long post! As always - all of the videos have a soundtrack and are best viewed in full screen (the little outward pointing arrows symbol to the right of the word Vimeo at the bottom of the video)

I had a lovely time with Kezia over the summer holidays. We saw a lot of Aunty Suzie and Harry and had some really lovely days playing in their swimming pool and lounging about the field with the horses.

We also had lots of visits with Grum and Grandpa Watkinson ...

One of the trips that we managed to rope Chance into was a local affair at Wrest Park. During WW1 Wrest Park was turned into a military convalescing hospital and this year they remembered the soldiers who recovered there by doing some re-enacting. We went along to have a look and had a jolly good time! Kezia made friends with some other little children and had a lovely time running 'round with them before we went off for our own family adventure

Later in the summer Kez and I went to Stowe Landscape Gardens with Grum and Grandpa W. It was a lovely day - although a little chilly and we managed to avoid all rainclouds!

At the end of the summer I took Kez, along with Grum and Grandpa W, to see the English National Ballet perform Sleeping Beauty. Oh my goodness - Kez was blown away! It was a lovely production of the ballet and Kez did really well to last the entire 3.5 hour performance. I was incredibly proud of how grown up she is!

Then following on from The Olympics, there was Horse of the Year Show. Kez loved watching the Mounted Pony Club Games and so we had our own version of HOYS at the stables

Much of our holiday has been spent having little days here and there, so here is a selection of photos from the summer period.

Watch out for the next update over the weekend ... Kezia's First Ballet Exam (eek!) ,her very first Halloween Party, and a special little something for the festive period.

Skills you have to marvel at ... or not ...

Hi chaps!

Well, you have probably all been wondering where us Hoopers toddled off to ... I shall let you into a little secret ...

Way back in September, in a helpful bid to back up all the our photos, I deleted all photos and video's off the laptop! "What, permanently deleted?" I hear you cry. Oh yes! I have skills the rest of you can only marvel at! Thank goodness for Chance - the King of IT - who managed to find some sort of fabulous software that rescued it all for me.

Now, having gone through over 660,000 files and recovered the original jpeg files, I am finally in a position to update the blog!

So, hold onto your seats people - over the next few days I will try and catch you up on all the lovely activities of our lass and the fun that we have had in the last three months!

Love to you all

Baa baa black sheep ...

At the weekend us Hoopers travelled down to Surrey to visit Jean and Robin for Jean's birthday.

On the Friday night we watched the first 30 mins of the Olympics Opening Ceremony before grabbing a sleepy Kez from her bed and whizzing down the motorway to Surrey. We managed to get to Surrey in time to see the last of teams enter the stadium and Kezia was still up to see the cauldron being lit. I hadn't really been looking forward to the Olympics but the opening ceremony really got me in the mood. I think the way the cauldron was lit by the next generation of hopeful Olympians was very moving.

On the Saturday we went for a lovely meal and then we toddled off to Godstone Farm. It is a lovely farm with animals to pet and watch being fed etc and also has some playgrounds and indoor climbing frame things. Kez had a wonderful time showing Nanny and Grampy - which she pronounces Grumpy! - the animals. We found some miniature shetlands - one of which was a foal - and Kezia was overjoyed! We told her they were Gilda's sisters! chuckle.

The pigs were both smelly and rather large and noisy, so Kez wasn't a huge fan of them but she did like the ducks and the chickens.

Before we left the Farm we went to the petting area where there were little rabbits, guinea pigs and a chicken (!) to pet and have some one to one time with. Kezia checked out all the rabbits before finding her favourite one and giving that lots of cuddles. She also wanted to stroke the chicken but was a bit frightened by it, so Mummy helped out with that one! chuckle.

Whilst we were petting the small animals, Grampy Hooper discovered he could conduct the sheep in the pen next to us ... he is a man of hidden talents ...

It was a really lovely weekend and we were sad to leave at the end of it. Kezia is already asking when she can see her Nanny and Grumpy again, so we will have to make sure we meet for another lovely day like it soon.

Margot Fontayne has nothing on us ...

6 weeks ago Kezia started ballet and to celebrate the end of term us grown ups were allowed to watch the children do their lesson.

So often in Kezia's little life she has filled my heart with joy and pride and this event was no exception. To watch her little face light up with each dance was just amazing. She's so young, and yet lives life to the full and revels in everything.

Our skipping could do with some work but she followed every instruction given by her tutor, Mr Maurice, and really concentrated on what was required of her.

She really is growing up into a lovely little girl - full of smiles and laughter. It has been brilliant to be given the opportunity to watch her dance. I can see great things ahead for her. With this much enthusiasm in her little soul she is bound to go far, no matter what she does.

Was I proud? Was I 'eck as like! And just a little bit tearful at times!

Here is the first premier of Kezia Ellowen - prima ballerina! One day we will be watching her on stage as she performs Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty at The Royal Opera House, just like we used to watch Darcy Bussell ... ok, I may be getting a bit carried away there but you get me drift!

I give you - with huge amounts of love and pride - my daughter:

Remember - it is the square shape to the left of the word 'vimeo' that allows you to view this full screen.

Here we go 'round the Mulberry Bush

Well, what a lovely start we have had to the summer! Despite the rain, Kezia and I have had some lovely times up the stable with Gilda and she is turning into a great success. Sometimes Grum comes up with us and we have a play day up the yard, but most time Kez and I potter about on our own. The bond between Kezia and Gilda is growing all the time and she is proving to be a real little star:

Dear old Pops turned 63 *eek!* on the 16th July and to celebrate us Hoopers met with the Watkinsons at the Woburn Sands Folk Festival. It was really good! There were lots of different groups of Morris Dancers who danced their way around the numerous pubs in Woburn Sands and at the local farm there was a lovely little Folk Festival. There was a stage set up for folk musicians to play on - which I really enjoyed but the rest of our group was less than impressed! chuckle. There were some very nice craft stands, some arty bits and a fair few activities for the children. There was also a History of Woburn Sands tent, where we were most surprised to see old bills from David Church and Co - the local garage that my grandad (Dave Church) owned and ran. Most peculiar to see some of your own family listed as 'historical' - especially when they are still alive and kicking! chuckle. Below is a little sample of the day - Kezia makes an appearance at the end as she teaches everyone else how Morris Dancing should be done!

We did have a lovely day. We rounded it off with a lovely dinner at Mamma's and some rather nice homemade Birthday cake for Pops!

Ready, Steady ... Wave!

Yesterday was Kezia's first Sports Day! And it was hilarious!

There isn't really much to say about this - the video tells it all! But I was so very proud of my darling girl. She is a real little diamond! xxxxx

I is ffreee fingeys old ...

Well ... what a day Sunday the 13th May was this year!

Kez woke up bright and early on the morning of her birthday and gleefully ran into our bedroom shouting "I is Ffreeee fingeys old today" whilst brandishing her last 3 fingers on one hand in the air!

And do you know what, she was right! The birthday bunny had been and visited in the night and left a small collection of presents to open.

Then we had a birthday lunch and Grum and Grandpa arrived. They had got Kezia a lovely bundle of pressies which she loved. A skewbald fluffy horse (in a matching bag) has become a favourite and has been given the name of Blommas; named for Aunty Sue's horse which is neither skewbald nor called Blommas but is in fact a grey horse called Blossom. But I can see where she's coming from!

Grum and Grandpa had also bought Kezia her first Ballet outfit, which she starts this Thursday. It is a beautiful white leotard with a little skirt, white hairband for her bun, white ballet shoes, white socks and I've knitted a white sparkly ballet cardigan to go alongside it. She loves to do ballet to her Ballet DVD so she will be blown away to start ballet this week.

Then came the time for the BIG PRESENT. For this, Grum and Grandpa had to follow us in our cars. We parked at a lovely house and then all of us ran down the drive to wait at the bottom of it for the gift to be delivered. Eventually round the corner came Aunty Sue (Suzie), Uncle Trevor (Trebor) and their son, Harry. Being pulled behind their landie was a big trailer with lots and lots of pink balloons hanging off it. Now what could this be?

We all ran back up the drive behind the landie and waited for Trebor to open the doors. And there, stood in the trailer, was Suzie, Harry and a beautiful chestnut miniature Shetland called Gilda. Yes, we have bought Kezia a shetland! Suzie found Gilda for sale a few months ago thought she would be perfect for our Kez. Since about March Gilda has been over in Suzie's fields chilling out whilst Kez and I went over once a week with Grum to go and get to know her. Kezia has ridden her a couple of time already and is totally in love with her. And I'm rather smitten too!

We had a lovely birthday picnic in the stables before leaving a very tired Gilda nodding off in the stable !

It really was a most amazing and wonderful day. I shall never forget it. The effort everyone went to in order to make it happen - thank you so much guys. We love you all.

And here is the video of Kezia's Birthday:

Catch up ...

Hello my dear peeps!

Here is the long awaited blog post ... don't get too excited though!

As you all know, Kez and I had a trip to London to see the David Hockney exhibition in London last month with Grum. We had a lovely day. We started out by taking the train into London and Kezia very helpfully plotted our way on the tube map for us. We got there with loads of time to spare, so went into the posh cafe area for some lunch because Grum is a Fellow of the Academy - can we all say 'sweetie daaahling'!

Whilst we waited for our timed entry we popped out in the forecourt of the academy for some fresh air ... and Kezia found the pigeons! We had some brioche (oh yes, we ARE posh!) which Kez fed them - although they had to earn their vittles as Kezia inadvertently chased most of them away from the crumbs with her excitement! She did make a random friend that day, in the form of a lady from Bedfordshire. We didn't know the lady at all - but it didn't stop our lass from sitting next to her and having a good ole gossip! I swear to goodness that the child is 2 going on 45!

The Hockney exhibition was very interesting. I'm not sure it was quite my cup of tea and I'm still not sure whether I'm a fan of his work but it was good to see it in the flesh. Although not as good as seeing Anish Kapoor's work! I am coming to the conclusion that I prefer sculptures to paintings ...

(remember chaps - just click the outward pointing arrows at the bottom of the video for full screen mode ...)

A few days after the Hockney trip the Watkinson-Hoopers (minus Chance and The Boy) went for a lovely afternoon at Marston Vale. The sun was shining beautifully that day and Kezia had a wonderful time at the playground. She even made a little friend and had a good giggle going down the slide holding hands with her. Then we had a nice walk 'round the lake before having an ice cream. It was just one of those lovely, simple days out.

Following on from that, it was Chance's birthday. Oh yes, he has hit the big 3-5! chuckle. Kezia and I spent the day making his birthday cake and then she made him a simply gorgeous birthday card. One of her favourite films at the moment is the Kung Fu Panda, and I'm sure you'll all agree that there is a panda on the front of the card! She dictated the inside of the card to me, and then did the glittery hearts by herself. The trip to the RA last month is obviously working! hahahaha!

Finding Hockney

Good grief Penfold. I don't know where the time is going at the moment!

I am in the middle of writing our update for February and March ... but whilst I finish that off I thought I would share a quick preview of our trip to London to see the David Hockney exhibition at the RA (Royal Academy of Art)

Enjoy and I will be back later will the full update!

KONY 2012

This is an unusual post for me. And not one you will see very often.

I want you ALL to take the time to watch this 30 minute video. And then I want you to ACT.

I cannot tell you how important this is to me - just imagine if Jacob was Kezia, or Harry ...

I believe in the power of the people. Together we can do great things. Let us start with this.

The Chickenpox Christmas

Wow - when, exactly, did 2012 get here?! We've had such a busy and frantic December I can't quite believe that we've hit January already.

So, to update you all on recent Hooper shannigans. Our Christmas started with Kezia's Christmas Concert (see earlier blog entry) which was just lovely. Unfortunately, Kezia caught a stinking cold during this time and was rather poorly and grumpy afterwards. She was just starting to recover when, a week before Christmas, she came down with chicken pox.

It was really bad timing. We had Nanny and Grampy Hooper (Jean and Robin) to stay the weekend before Christmas but Chance and I spent the night of their stay with a very sick and vomitty Kezia. So we had a very quiet Christmas celebration that weekend. We opened our presents with Kezia sleeping wrapped up in blankets on the settee. She came too once in a while to stroke her presents from Nanny and Grampy but other than that she was too poorly to do anything. Poor old in-laws had to have sandwiches for tea before going home, whilst our turkey crown and all the trimmings slowly went south in the fridge! It was such a shame.

And then the next day I woke up to find that Kezia was rather spotty. And then more spotty. And then a bit more ... so off to the nurse we went for our chicken pox confirmation! Poor old Kez. She managed very well with it - most of the spots were on her body and bottom and her face was saved completely. She also got away really well on the scarring front, and just has 2 very small marks on the front of one shoulder, which will undoubtedly fade with time. They're tiny.

Sadly, we had lots of activities planned for Kezia in the week up to Christmas - a special Christmas Ride on her cousins pony Bill, a mini Christmas with her 4 Great Grandparents and the local village fair and carol concert. All of this we had to avoid, as we were in quarantine until the Thursday before Crimbo. It also means that in all of our Christmas photos and videos she is wearing her pyjamas, because they were comfy against her skin and kept her warm! So she looks like a right little ragamuffin. Poor sausage!

Kezia was thoroughly spoiled by everyone at Christmas, both by their gifts and by their company. So thank you to you all. That you think of my lass at Christmas time is unexpected and lovely. What a wonderful and large family she has in all of you. We love you all. xxx

The Chickenpox Christmas:

The Stick Horse

Hi chaps
Sorry it's been so long since our last update - horrible and slow death of macbook! Thank god for the Church of Steve, otherwise known as the Apple store!

I'm doing a bit of catch up here (news about December and Christmas to follow shortly)

At the end of November I organised a family get together at Wimpole Hall (yup - we like it there!) and had a lovely time.

It was so long ago now, I can't remember many specific details to relay. But Kezia learnt to ride a horse, thanks to her Suzie, and everyone had an awesome time jumping in a big leaf pile that we'd made! Even the adults joined in. There are some amazing photos somewhere - I believe they belong to Soph or Tom - that if I ever get my hands on I shall post up here! Chance jumping headlong into a pile of leaves was a sight worth seeing. Sophie delicately placed herself in the middle of it like a little ballerina, Trevor threw himself head first into it like a plane and came up gasping for air whilst Kezia went in with a scream!

Below is a very short video of our time there. It was a lovely day. A lovely opportunity to visit an old family haunt with everyone, approx 15 yrs on!

Spending time with my cousins brought back lovely memories of my childhood with them at Wimpole but it was also lovely to see the two young ones of our group create their own memories of the leaves. Sometimes you just can't beat a Watkinson-Wyatt adventure.
